Key takeaways

  • Across 25 GTA schools' own websites on August 27, 2026, the median entry beginner driver course is $599 as each school prints it, and 15 of the 25 price theirs between $499 and $620 before tax.
  • One hour of in-car instruction is $40 to $65 at 19 of the 20 schools that publish an hourly rate, and the median is $50 as each school prints it.
  • Using the school's car for the G2 road test runs $120 to $220 as printed at 16 of the 17 schools that price it, and the test centre moves that price more than the school does.
  • Tax and fees sit outside the headline at most schools: 21 of the 25 quote before HST. All Star's $599 course is $599 + $30.00 = $629, and $629 x 0.13 = $81.77 of HST, for a published total of $710.77.
  • All 25 schools publish a price somewhere on their site. On the Toronto search for driving lessons captured on August 27, 2026, four of the eight organic results showed a price on the page the searcher lands on.

The middle price for a full beginner driver education course in Toronto is $599, as the schools themselves print it. Beginner driver education (BDE) is the government approved course that lets you book your first road test sooner. We read the posted prices at 25 GTA schools on August 27, 2026, and $599 is the middle across all 25. An hourly lesson is a different product, at $40 to $65 an hour. The school's car for your G2 road test (the first of two tests, and the one that lets you drive alone) is a third price again, usually $120 to $220. Most schools quote before HST and some add a fee for the Ministry of Transportation certificate (MTO on most price pages), so the number you compare is rarely the number you pay.

The middle is tight: $599 is the going rate, not a deal.

The outlier is Young Drivers of Canada, which ranks first for this search in Toronto. Its cheapest Toronto course is $2,239.00 with no tax stated beside it, or $2,239.00 / $599 = 3.74 times the median, and it already bundles a G2 road test in a school car. Drop it from the set and the middle barely moves: ($589 + $599) / 2 = $594. Ontario says why: "government-approved driving schools independently set their own rates, which may vary across Ontario."

A marketplace listing 20 further Toronto schools shows a course price for each, and $599.00 is the most common figure there, appearing eight times.

What one hour behind the wheel costs

An in-car hour is one hour of driving with a licensed instructor, sold on its own. It is what a learner buys instead of the full course. G1 is the written-test permit you start with, and once its waiting time is served, hourly lessons are the only option left.

Twelve of the 20 schools that publish an hourly rate are listed above, and the median across all 20 is $50 as each school prints it. Most of the rows above quote before HST; Sprint and North York include it, and Driving Skills Academy and Beiras say nothing about tax.

Globe charges $112 plus HST for two hours, or $112 / 2 = $56 an hour. Triumph charges $80 plus HST for 90 minutes, or $80 / 1.5 = $53.33. New Method Vaughan charges $90 with HST included for 90 minutes, or $90 / 1.5 = $60, an all-in hour against two pre-tax ones. Young Drivers is the outlier again: one 90 minute lesson is $209.00, which is $209.00 / 1.5 = $139.33 an hour.

What the school's car costs on test day

You need a car for the G2 road test. Some rent the car alone, others sell a lesson plus the car, so the table says which.

Across all 17 schools that price it, the median is $190, and what moves it is the test centre, not the school. Adam charges $160 at Metro East, $180 at Port Union, $200 at Downsview and $220 at Oshawa, Newmarket or Etobicoke, so $220 / $160 = 1.375, or 37.5 per cent more for the same service. Six Points charges $190 plus HST at Downsview or Etobicoke, $225 plus HST at Port Union, Metro East or Mississauga, and $265 or more further out. North York's $220 is the one price here that already includes HST.

Several schools bundle the car for a "local" test without saying what local means, so ask which centres count. Sprint says its instructor-car packages cover examinations in Downsview and Victoria Park only. Six Points publishes what happens if weather cancels a test: half the road test fee if the instructor has already reached the centre, nothing if the journey has not started. Fifteen of the 17 schools that price the road test car are listed above.

What the 40 hours actually buy

The Ministry of Transportation sets the content, not the school. The Beginner Driver Education curriculum standards require 20 hours of classroom instruction, 10 hours in the car and 10 flexible hours, for a "Total Minimum Required Instructional Hours 40 hours (excludes breaks and travel time)". The flexible hours can go to class time, digital lessons, simulator time or homelinks (workbook exercises done at home). Ontario's own page says the 40 hours "must be completed in one year".

A package sold as "30 hours online" is usually the 20 classroom hours and the 10 homelink hours added together, not extra content. Compare on the in-car hours, which do vary from 10 to 20, and on whether the road test car is included.

Two benefits get sold together and only one is certain. On time, ontario.ca is plain: "If you finish a government-approved driver education course, you can take your first road test after just eight months," against "In most cases, you practice with your G1 licence for 12 months." That is four months of your life, and it is a ministry rule.

The insurance discount is not guaranteed

Almost every school here advertises the saving flatly, with wording like "Insurance Discount Certificate". Ontario's own page is careful: "Your insurance provider may provide a discount after you have completed a BDE Program... Note that this is not part of Ontario's BDE Program, and completing a course does not guarantee a discount." One of the 25, Stellar, uses the accurate wording: graduates "may be eligible for an insurance discount". Ask your insurer what it is worth first.

The price you compare is not the price you pay

Of the 25 schools, 13 show an all-in total or quote tax inclusive. Ten state "+ HST" and publish no total anywhere. Two say nothing about tax beside the price, so you cannot tell whether $850 is the final number. The headline you compare is quoted before tax at 21 of the 25, while Adam and New Method Vaughan print theirs with HST already in.

The ministry certification fee is not a fixed pass-through either. All Star and Six Points itemise it at $30.00. Gold Star prints it as $0.00 and Sprint prints it as $0.0. HOQ says it is included. Three more schools add an unpriced "certificate fee" or "processing fee". All Nations and Top Star share the lowest headline here, $499. All Nations also lists the road test car as an "(Extra Fee)" with no figure anywhere on the page.

All Star's Package #1 shows what that does to a headline. It is $599 plus a $30.00 certification fee, so $599 + $30.00 = $629, and $629 x 0.13 = $81.77 of HST. The published total is $710.77, or $710.77 / $599 = 1.187, which is 18.7 per cent above the number you compared.

Struck prices are the norm: 12 of the 25 showed a discount against a higher regular price on survey day, and two attach coupon codes.

Check a school's arithmetic too. North York Driving School prints its Gold course as $780 plus HST 13% and as "Including HST $880", but $780 x 1.13 = $881.40. Gold Star's table prints a $0.00 certification fee and a $653 total on a $550.00 course with $73.00 of HST, which is $30 more than the parts it lists.

Where the prices are, and where they are not

All 25 schools publish a price somewhere on their own site and none is call-only. The problem is where the number sits. On the Toronto search for driving lessons captured on August 27, 2026, four of the eight organic results showed a price on the page itself. They were Young Drivers at the top, AMB at number two, a comparison page at number four, and Top Star at the bottom. The other four were schools whose price list sits a click away.

Triumph ranks sixth on a page offering "competitive fees" with no figure, while a full price list with totals sits one click away on its registration page.

Three pages argue with themselves. Gold Star's package cards read $517.00, $669.00 and $825.00, while the table lower down the same page reads $550.00, $700.00 and $850.00. iDrive's home page offers "one hour G2 class for as low as $40" while its lessons page prices that hour at $65. Kruzee's table says other schools charge "$850-$1,400 ($30 MTO fee, etc.)" against its own $795, but the median across the 25 schools here is $599.

The same school can charge you by postcode. Ultimate Drivers prices the identical program at $606.19 plus HST in Mississauga Central and $575.22 plus HST in Brampton, a gap of $606.19 - $575.22 = $30.97. HOQ charges $599 in Scarborough and $625 in Oshawa.

How to check a school before you pay

The badge on the website is not the proof. The ministry's list is, it is free, and it takes half a minute. Twenty-three of the 25 match by name to a licensed location on it. Two could not be matched at the address they advertise, which is not evidence of wrongdoing: schools are licensed under a registered business name that need not match the brand.

The approved schools list and the revoked list sit on the same ontario.ca page, and the open dataset version is refreshed weekly.

Mississauga and Brampton each list more than the 61 filed under "Toronto", because Scarborough, North York and Etobicoke count as separate cities. The file also carries a Digital curriculum column, and two schools priced here sell an online course at a location the ministry marks "Not available".

Then ask for five things in writing: the all-in total with tax and fees, the number of in-car hours, whether the road test car is included and at which centre, the refund terms, and what your insurer will take off your premium.

From two 2026 Reddit threads on paying for driving lessons in the GTA

  • “It would help me get an insurance discount, but it's quite expensive upfront. On the other hand, I could take private lessons from an individual instructor for much cheaper, but I'm not sure if that would qualify me for the same insurance benefits.”

Frequently asked questions

How much do driving lessons cost in Toronto?

Three products, three answers, each as the schools print it. The full beginner driver course has a median of $599 across all 25 schools here. One in-car hour has a median of $50 across the 20 that price one. The school's car for the G2 road test has a median of $190 across the 17 that price it.

How much are 12 driving lessons?

At the median hourly rate, twelve hours is 12 x $50 = $600, and $600 x 1.13 = $678 if HST is added on top. At the lowest rate here, $40.00 plus HST at Top Star and HOQ, the same twelve hours is 12 x $40.00 = $480 before tax.

Is it better to have 1 hour lessons or 2?

The longer block is often the cheaper hour. Globe's two hour assessment is $112 plus HST, or $112 / 2 = $56 an hour, against single hours of $40 to $65 elsewhere.

Is 20 lessons enough to pass?

No school here publishes a pass rate tied to a number of lessons. The ministry sets a floor of 10 in-vehicle hours, and packages here go up to 20 in-car hours. Ontario tells you to treat any offer of a "guaranteed licence" as a fraud signal.

Is the beginner driver course worth it?

One benefit is certain and one is not. Ontario states that finishing an approved course lets you take your first road test "after just eight months" instead of the usual 12. The insurance saving is separate, and ontario.ca says a completed course "does not guarantee a discount".

How much is the car for the G2 test?

The cheapest here is $120 for the car alone: Driving Skills Academy and Triumph plus HST, Beiras with no tax stated. Most land between $150 and $220, and the centre matters more than the school. North York's $220 already includes HST.
