Brampton Garbage Schedule and What Goes in Which Bin

Your garbage in Brampton is collected by Peel Region, not the City of Brampton. The City's own waste page says so. For most houses Peel picks up garbage every other week and organics every week, and your recycling now arrives on a schedule Circular Materials sets, not Peel. Since January 1, 2026 that recycling is not Peel's at all: Circular Materials runs the program, GFL collects it, and a missed blue cart goes to GFL rather than to Peel or 311. Your weekday depends on your address, so the only reliable answer is Peel's collection calendar.

Who actually collects it, and who takes over in 2027

Brampton's own waste page says it plainly: "Waste collection in the City of Brampton is managed by Peel Region and recycling is managed by Circular Materials." Garbage, organics, yard waste, bins and tags are 905-791-9499. Recycling is 1-877-268-4351.

That split has an end date. In May 2026 the City announced it takes over waste collection on October 1, 2027, providing garbage, organics and yard waste in Brampton and, on the Town's behalf, Caledon. Peel's contract runs to September 30, 2027. Recycling stays with Circular Materials, and Peel keeps owning and operating the Community Recycling Centres.

How the cycle works, and where to look up your address

Everything turns on a two-week rhythm on one weekday:

• Organics (green bin): every week. Participation is mandatory.
• Garbage: every other week for most households.
• Recycling: a different day from your garbage, on Circular Materials' schedule. Peel confirms only that the two days differ: its garbage exemption release says "Extra garbage is collected only on your garbage collection day, not on your recycling collection day". And since January 1, 2026 the recycling calendar is not Peel's to publish. Peel's own definition of the cycle now covers only the other two streams: "Bi-weekly means that organics will be picked up one week, then garbage and organics will be picked up the other week." Take your recycling day from the calendar Circular Materials sends.
• Yard waste: weekly in Brampton during the season. Peel's March 2, 2026 release set the start at the week of March 9, with Brampton and Mississauga weekly.

We publish no collection dates here on purpose. They are address-specific and reissued yearly, so a date printed in an article is wrong for most readers and eventually for everyone. Use the calendar lookup, or sign up for free reminders by email, text or phone.

Timing is fixed. Bins go out by 7 a.m. and come back in by 8 p.m. Brampton's Garbage and Debris page adds the front end: items may be placed out after 7 p.m. the day before collection.

In bag-based areas garbage goes out as bags, cans or containers (up to four on your garbage day), with the green bin still weekly.

What goes in which bin

Green bin: weekly, and stricter than Toronto's

Peel's green bin takes food scraps and peels, bones, meat and fish, coffee grounds and filters, paper napkins and towels, loose shredded paper, cotton balls, greasy pizza boxes, microwave popcorn bags and house plants (soil removed).

Three rules catch out anyone who moved here from Toronto, where the Green Bin runs the other way:

• Diapers are garbage in Peel. Toronto's Green Bin accepts them; Peel's acceptable-organics page names them as not acceptable.
• Pet waste and kitty litter are garbage too, bagged and tied, and Peel caps the volume: pet waste "can't total more than 10% of your garbage on your garbage collection week."
• Plastic grocery and retail bags are not accepted. Peel lines the green bin with cardboard, newspaper, shredded paper, paper towels or certified compostable bags bearing the certification symbol. Toronto is the mirror image: line the kitchen catcher or the Green Bin, "not both", "with any plastic bag", since "compostable plastic bags are not necessary". And it sends compostable-labelled containers, coffee pods, cups and cutlery to the garbage.

Kitchen containers cost $5 at Access Peel counters and select Community Recycling Centres.

Garbage: every other week, plus bulky items

The garbage bin catches aluminum foil, bread and milk tags, chewing gum, diapers, feminine hygiene products, pet waste, plastic cereal and cracker box liners, and shrink wrap. Lid closed, handles toward the house, arrows toward the street, 1 m of clear space around it.

Bulky items are collected free from the curb. Furniture, mattresses and barbecues go out by 7 a.m. on your garbage week (never your recycling week), with the propane tank removed and taken to a Community Recycling Centre.

Blue cart: not Peel's any more

Circular Materials' Peel list is broader than the old one: foam packaging (meat trays, takeout containers, cups), flexible plastics (bread bags, chip bags, bubble wrap), paper laminate packaging, cartons, aerosol containers and glass. The preparation rules carry real conditions: cartons and hard plastic containers keep their lids on, glass and paper laminate containers go lids off, and alcoholic beverage containers are excluded from cartons, glass, metal, hard plastic and plastic packaging alike. Cardboard must be flattened and no larger than 60 x 60 cm.

Not accepted at all: books, toys, diapers, pots and pans, hazardous materials and batteries. Materials go in clean, dry and loose. Do not bag them, with one exception: shredded paper goes in a tied clear plastic bag. Out by 7 a.m.

Yard waste: kraft bags only, and never grass

Yard waste goes out in kraft brown paper bags or a rigid container clearly labelled "yard waste" by marker or a free CRC sticker. Plastic bags are left behind. Bags and containers cap at 20 kg; single branches must be under 1.2 m long and 10 cm wide; loose brush must be tied into bundles under 1.2 m long and 76 cm across. Blue, grey and green bins are not acceptable yard waste containers.

Grass clippings are not collected at the curb or accepted at Community Recycling Centres. Peel's answer is grasscycling: leave them on the lawn.

Bin sizes, and the fees Peel can actually charge

The organics bin comes in one size only, 100 L. Peel describes the three garbage bins by how much each holds:

There is no annual bin fee. Searching Peel's five bin, moving and waste-service pages for "annual", "fee", "cost", "charge", "utility bill" and "property tax" turns up exactly one charge: the exchange fee below. Bin repairs, lost-bin replacement and missed-pickup reports are free.

The $7 minimum applies only to loads of chargeable items; above it, the rate is 14.5 cents per kilogram. The fees page adds that "dedicated loads of recycling, metals, electronics, and appliances are accepted for free", and Peel's hazardous waste page takes household hazardous waste "for free, safe disposal". CRCs take debit or credit only, no cash. Brampton has two: 395 Chrysler Dr. and the Heart Lake CRC at 420 Railside Dr.

Extra garbage needs a tagged black plastic bag, under 20 kg, smaller than 66 cm wide by 90 cm high and larger than 30 cm by 30 cm. There is an exception: on your garbage exemption day you can put out any amount of acceptable garbage with no tags at all. The day is on your collection calendar; the same size and weight limits still apply.

Two Peel pages differ on who may request a bin exchange. The service page sets eligibility by address alone; the tenant-facing moving page says "Only property owners or landlords can request a bin exchange." Neither resolves the other, so if you rent, take the route Peel gives tenants and ask your landlord. Either way the swap happens the day after your garbage day.

Holidays push Peel collection one day later

Toronto's holiday page records "no service impact" on curbside collection for holiday after holiday. In Peel, a statutory holiday means no pickup that day and everything shifts one day later for the rest of that week.

Community Recycling Centres close on statutory and provincial holidays. Peel publishes no yearly table, and its holiday hours page is not a reliable substitute: on August 26, 2026 it still showed the Canada Day notice, three weeks after a Civic Holiday it never covered. Peel's per-holiday vehicle is a press release, so check its newsroom or your calendar in the week before.

When your bin is left behind

Wait until 8 p.m. on your collection day first: yard waste rides a different truck and can come that late. If nothing has arrived by then and you set out correctly, report it, free.

Peel publishes no deadline for reporting. Searched on August 26, 2026, its waste-not-picked-up, waste-services, set-out, exemption and missed-yard-waste pages returned zero matches for "business day", "within", "deadline", "next day" and "24 hours". Toronto, by contrast, requires you to report "within one business day of the scheduled collection day". Peel states no cut-off. Report it the same evening anyway.

First rule out Peel's own list of reasons: wrong week, a holiday moved the day, waste out after 7 a.m., handles not facing the house, a parked car in the way, bins too close together, bins behind or on a snowbank, or an untagged extra bag.

Storage is Brampton's department, and it is enforced with set fines. The City's Refuse and Garbage Container Fines table sets $250.00 for a first offence, $500.00 for a second and $750.00 for a subsequent one for storing a receptacle in a yard facing a street, setting waste or receptacles out outside the permitted time frame, or failing to remove waste receptacles by 8 p.m. on collection day. Carts belong in the garage, side yard or back yard, with named exceptions where the property cannot manage it: a side yard under 1.0 m, rear access narrower than a cart, or no garage or carport.

Apartments, condos and townhouses

In a building, your property manager is Peel's customer, not you, so service questions go to them.

There is no green bin for multi-unit dwellings in Peel. Two organics pilots run in partnering buildings, each with a free starter kit and a small bin. Peel says to identify yours by what you were sent: Pilot 1 is any plastic bag plus a separate organics chute; Pilot 2 is only the supplied green bags and the building's existing garbage chute. Outside those pilots, organics are not collected from apartments.

For recycling, property managers or superintendents give each unit a free reusable bag to carry loose acceptable items to the building's recycling bin. Christmas trees go to the curb by the driveway entrance, undecorated and out of any plastic bag.

Townhouse blocks are the one case we could not settle for Brampton. Peel's December 2025 release says only that residents keep their existing blue bins and that "their collection day will stay the same". Secondary accounts describe townhomes on weekly bagged recycling moving to every other week; no Peel or Circular Materials page we found says so for Brampton, so we are not publishing it as fact. Ask GFL. Where a block uses bags rather than carts, Peel's bag-based rules apply.
