Key takeaways
- On a Saturday, Sunday or statutory holiday one adult pays $10 for unlimited GO train and bus travel, so the return fare to every GO destination here is the same.
- Six of the eighteen places have a last Saturday departure back to Union before 20:30. Stratford's is 18:16 and Kitchener's is 19:04, read on August 27, 2026.
- The median walk from station to the named landmark is 20 minutes. Four stations sit more than 3 km away, and Kingston's is 5.83 km.
- The $10 weekend pass is a GO e-ticket, and GO says e-tickets are not eligible for One Fare, so every connecting local bus is paid separately.
- Royal Botanical Gardens states there is no direct bus from Aldershot GO and the Gardens are 4 km away. Burlington GO plus Burlington Transit Route 1 is the route that works.
The cheapest car-free day trip out of Toronto costs $10, and so does the most expensive one. On a Saturday, Sunday or statutory holiday, GO's One-Day Weekend Pass covers any GO train or bus, so Port Credit and Niagara Falls cost an adult the same. The best-connected trip is Port Credit: 21 minutes from Union on the 06:40 GO Bus 18, a 0.73 km walk to Port Credit Memorial Park, and a Saturday-night train back at 00:14. None of that decides whether a place works. The last departure home does. Six of the eighteen places timed here send their last Saturday service to Union before 20:30, and one leaves at 18:16.
The last departure is the whole problem
Every list of day trips near Toronto assumes you drive home whenever you like. Take the car away and the day has a hard edge: you are choosing a departure time printed hours ahead.
Times are on the 24-hour clock GO prints, so 19:28 is 7:28 in the evening.
What one adult pays
GO's One-Day Weekend Pass is $10 for a single Saturday, Sunday or statutory holiday. GO describes it as unlimited travel "on any GO train or bus, to and from wherever you're going". Three conditions come with it, all on the same page. You must buy it online in advance, it works on smartphones only, and it cannot be loaded onto a PRESTO card, the region's reloadable tap-to-pay transit card.
The fourth condition is the one that costs people money. The pass "is not valid on other transit systems or part of the One-Fare / Co-Fare program". Co-Fare is the older discount some local systems give on their own fare when you connect to GO. Ontario's One Fare program gives a free connection between GO and eight other systems: Burlington Transit, Brampton Transit, Durham Region Transit, HSR, MiWay, Oakville Transit, the TTC and YRT. You get it by tapping a PRESTO card, credit card or debit card. GO says "GO e-tickets are not eligible for One Fare", and the weekend pass is an e-ticket. Travel on the pass and every connecting city bus is a separate fare.
Kids 12 and under ride GO free and need no ticket. On GO's regular fares an adult saves 15% by tapping PRESTO and a senior aged 65 or older saves 55%. A youth aged 13 to 19 saves 40%, and so does a full-time post-secondary student.
Every place we timed
Four facts for each place, read on August 27, 2026 from the operator's own pages. Fares are for one adult. The fastest run is the quickest published departure from Union between 06:00 and 14:00 on the Saturday timetable. Where that run is a GO bus, it leaves the Union Station Bus Terminal, a separate building from the train platforms. The last departure back is the last service of the Saturday service day. On four routes that is a train or bus in the small hours of Sunday morning, not one before midnight. Walks were measured from the station to the landmark named, on OpenStreetMap footpaths.

The last two columns carry the pattern. Eight of the eighteen have a departure at 23:00 or later, four of them after midnight. Six leave before 20:30, an early dinner and a sprint. Seventeen of the eighteen end in a walk, and the median of those walks is 20 minutes.
The walk is the part the lists leave out
Ten of those seventeen walks are 20 minutes or less. Four are more than 3 km and need a plan of their own.
Niagara Falls GO sits in the north end of the city, 3.98 km from Table Rock at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls, a 48-minute walk. Aldershot GO is 4.09 km from RBG Centre, the main Royal Botanical Gardens site. Kingston's VIA station is on John Counter Boulevard, 5.83 km from Springer Market Square. Kingston Transit's Route 2 runs between that station and a downtown stop, so plan that bus rather than the 70-minute walk.
Guelph is the opposite case: Guelph Central GO is 0.33 km from St George's Square, four minutes on foot.
Aldershot is the wrong station for the Gardens
Plenty of car-free lists send you to Aldershot for the Royal Botanical Gardens. Their directions page says otherwise. There are "no direct buses that run from Aldershot GO to RBG at this time". Travellers arriving there "may take a cab or ride share to the Gardens (4 km distance)".
The same page gives you another way out if you are already standing at Aldershot. It is "possible to walk or bike 1.2 km from the Aldershot station to Plains Road to catch the Route 1 bus from there".
The route they publish starts one station earlier: Lakeshore West to Burlington GO, then Burlington Transit Route 1 Plains to Hamilton, which runs to RBG Centre. GO's own promotion page names Burlington GO as the closest station.
That bus is where the pass choice bites. Burlington Transit is one of the systems GO lists for a free One Fare connection when you tap PRESTO, credit or debit. Travel on the $10 weekend pass instead and you pay it directly: $2.85 with a PRESTO card, or $3.75 in cash or by tapping credit or debit. Two rides at the PRESTO fare is 2 x $2.85 = $5.70 on top of your $10.
Niagara Falls, and the bus that closes the gap
For Niagara Falls the connecting bus is WEGO, Niagara Parks' hop-on hop-off service to the attractions. It prices an adult 24-hour pass at $16.00 and a 48-hour pass at $20.00, tax included. A child aged 3 to 12 pays $12.00 for 24 hours.
GO sells a combined ticket cheaper than buying both. The weekend GO+WEGO combo is $22 for an adult and includes, in GO's words, "GO Train + unlimited day pass for WEGO Bus". Bought separately that is $10 + $16.00 = $26.00, so the combo saves $4. Check what the GO half buys before you commit to it. GO's weekday page sells "Round trip tickets for the GO Train". The weekend page calls the same half a "GO Transit pass" and never says how far or how often you can ride on it.
The Niagara-on-the-Lake shuttle is part of the same WEGO system and needs no separate ticket, but it is seasonal. Niagara Parks runs it from April 4 to October 3, 2026, and GO's combo has included it since April 6, 2026. The deadline in the town is the last shuttle out, not the 22:10 train. Niagara Parks publishes that time in its Spring-Summer WEGO schedule. The last bus out of the town, route 604 southbound, leaves the Fort George stop at 7:00pm from April 4 to May 14. From May 15 to October 3 it leaves at 8:00pm. It reaches the Floral Clock half an hour later, where you change to the WEGO Green Line for the GO station.
The two that do not work as published
Port Hope is the clean failure. On a Saturday VIA pairs one train each way and both run the wrong way for a visitor: Toronto to Port Hope leaves at 17:38, Port Hope to Toronto at 12:09. Monday to Friday there are two each way, at 17:38 and 18:38 out and 07:43 and 12:09 back, and no pairing works on those days either.
Stratford depends on the day of the week. On a Saturday or Sunday, GO's Kitchener line runs one train out at 08:49, into Stratford at 11:16, and one back at 18:16, close to seven hours in town. Monday to Friday the same pairing runs the commuter direction instead. VIA does not rescue it: its one Toronto to Stratford train leaves at 17:40, its one Stratford to Toronto train at 11:16.
Check the schedule before you travel
Every time here was read on August 27, 2026 from GO timetables effective April 25 and July 6, 2026, and VIA's schedule feed of August 17, 2026. GO changes timetables several times a year and sets fares annually. Its April 25 Niagara Falls timetable still prints an earlier last train than its July 6 Lakeshore West timetable for the same trains. GO offers both on its PDF schedules page and warns there that "the PDF schedules below may not be the most recent". This page follows the later document and the live feed. Check your own last train back before you go.
What changes on a weekday
The $10 pass is a weekend and holiday product only. Without it, GO prices a single ride by distance and fare type. The trip planner quotes it, and so does the fare table Metrolinx publishes inside its own schedule feed. Union to Burlington is $12.30 one way there, and a trip inside one fare zone is $4.40, the same short-distance fare GO prints on its own page.
Any GO trip of 10 km or less costs $3.70 with a PRESTO card or $4.40 on paper. A Weekday Group Pass gives 2 to 5 people all-day unlimited GO travel on one weekday for a flat price.

Weekday service is not always thinner. Guelph and Kitchener get more trains Monday to Friday, and their last departures run later than the Saturday 19:28 and 19:04. Niagara Falls goes the other way: the Saturday 22:10 back becomes 19:59 on a weekday.
Cobourg, Kingston and Port Hope are VIA's, not GO's, and no GO pass covers them. Price them on VIA's site for your date.
How to plan one of these in five minutes
Start at the end. Find the last departure back to Union, subtract 20 minutes for the walk and whatever the connecting bus needs, and that is your deadline. Then work forwards to an outbound that leaves you a day worth the fare. On the long runs that is the 09:04 or the 08:49, because there is no later one.
Last, decide how you are paying. The usual advice, tap PRESTO when a city bus waits at the far end so One Fare covers it, is backwards at these distances. Take the Burlington case. On the pass you pay $10 + $5.70 = $15.70. Tapping buys GO's distance fare twice instead: 2 x $12.30 less the 15% PRESTO discount is about $20.91, and that is with both bus rides free. Divide the $15.70 by two fares at 85% of face value and the break-even is $9.24 one way. Above that the pass wins, bus or no bus. Below it, on the shortest hops, tapping does.
Frequently asked questions
What are some good day trips I can take from Toronto without a car?
Port Credit, Unionville, Guelph and both Hamilton stations are the easiest, because each puts you within a 12-minute walk of somewhere worth being. On the GO Weekend Pass all five cost $10 for the day. Guelph Central GO is 0.33 km from St George's Square, the shortest walk of the eighteen timed here on August 27, 2026.
What are some of the best GO Train day trips from Toronto?
Judge them on the last train back rather than the ride out. On the Saturday service day read on August 27, 2026, Port Credit, Oakville, Whitby, Burlington and Aldershot all have departures to Union after 23:30. Port Credit and Oakville still have one after midnight. Guelph, Kitchener and Stratford finish much earlier, at 19:28, 19:04 and 18:16.
Where to go 1 hour away from Toronto?
On the Saturday timetable, Port Credit is 21 minutes from Union and Oakville 32, both on GO Bus 18. Unionville is 30 on GO Bus 71, Whitby 50 on GO Bus 90 and Hamilton GO Centre 55 on GO Bus 16. Burlington is 49 minutes and Aldershot 57 by train. Those buses leave the Union Station Bus Terminal, not the train platforms.
What are the cheapest day trips from Toronto without a car?
They all cost the same on a weekend. GO's One-Day Weekend Pass is $10 for one Saturday, Sunday or statutory holiday and covers unlimited travel on any GO train or bus, so distance stops mattering. Buy it online in advance, because it is a smartphone e-ticket and cannot go on a PRESTO card.
Can you take a train from Toronto to Niagara Falls for the day?
Yes, and GO runs it year round. On the Saturday timetable the fastest run leaves Union at 09:04 and takes 2 hours 36 minutes, with the last departure back from Niagara Falls GO at 22:10. The station is 3.98 km from Table Rock, so budget for the WEGO bus: $16.00 for an adult 24-hour pass, or $22 for GO's combined weekend ticket.
Do I need a separate ticket for the local bus at the other end?
It depends how you paid for the GO part. Tap a PRESTO card, credit or debit and One Fare covers the connection to eight local systems, the TTC and MiWay among them. GO states that e-tickets are not eligible, and the $10 weekend pass is an e-ticket.
Can I get to Stratford from Toronto and back in a day?
On a Saturday or Sunday, yes. GO's Kitchener line leaves Union at 08:49, reaches Stratford at 11:16, and comes back at 18:16 into Union at 20:45. Monday to Friday the single train each way runs the commuter direction, and VIA's only Toronto to Stratford train leaves at 17:40, so a weekday visit does not work.
Are there day trips from Toronto by bus rather than train?
Yes, and the same $10 weekend pass covers them, because it works on any GO train or bus. GO Bus 16 reaches Hamilton GO Centre in 55 minutes from the 07:30 Saturday departure, quicker than the train to Hamilton West Harbour at 1 hour 11 minutes. Its last bus back leaves Hamilton at 01:00.
